12.09.06 - Background Information
History:
Originally built in 1925 – once known as the Scott Hotel, D Magazine
voted the Hotel Lawrence “The best hotel deal in
Dallas.”
With the NYC style, but without the NYC price tag, this boutique style hotel
once held an illegal gambling casino in the basement in the 20’s and 30’s.
This is a historical landmark in the heart of downtown Dallas, Texas.
Top
Testimony: New information in BOLD.
Internet rumors:
-
A ghost of a gentleman gambler seen
roaming the basement looking to join in on another game.
The actual
location of the illegal casino was on the 2nd floor.
-
A lady jumped to her death from the
Presidential Suite on the 10th floor back in the 40’s
-
Crying and dark shadows on 10th
floor
-
Cold spots in the lobby and the sounds of
footsteps between the hours of 12 Am to 6 AM
Other stories:
-
Someone committed suicide by jumping off
the roof
-
A woman dressed in slippers is looking
for her dead cat and then disappears on 10th floor
-
A man is looking for his cat on the 10th
floor
-
A congressman lived in the hotel for a
period of time and he jumped to his death on the 10th floor
Witness accounts:
These accounts are from hotel staff and guests
that have stayed inn the room (this info does
not
include our investigations)
-
Laundry carts moving on their own in the
basement
-
Eerie feelings in one of the storage
rooms in the basement
-
A door to a room on the 10th
floor sometimes doesn’t want to open to hotel staff – almost as if a
hand on the other side of the door is holding it closed
-
Calls are made from rooms #516, 915, and
1015 (Presidential Suite) to the sales office when no one is checked
into the room and employees are accounted for
-
Room #807 has resistance from the other
side when trying to open using a key card. Employees have to say “Move,”
in order for the “entity” to move out of the way so the key card will
finally work.
-
Room #1009: Guests staying in the room
have orbs in their pictures. While staying in the room their shower
razor was broken in half when they went to take a shower. The card key
locks can stop working on this door when “activity” is present.

03.16.07 - The
Investigation
Friday March 16, 2007: Investigation of 10th
floor: rooms #1007 (base camp), 1009, 1015 (Presidential Suite), 807, and 2nd
floor: conference rooms and hallways
The entire investigation took place between
8:30 PM-2 AM. The activity reported by hotel staff, rumors, and witnesses
seemed to take place during all times during the day and night.
Top
Baseline Tests:
Rooms #1007, 1009, 1015, and 807
EMF detectors (devices that measure
Electromagnetic Field) were basically useless in the hotel rooms due to
the wiring of the building. *Some say spirits give off magnetic
energy fields. Regardless, we still tried to use them anyway comparing
our base camp findings of room #1007 to that of the over rooms. We tried
the (3) different EMFs and all of them constantly went off pretty much no
matter how high or low you held them. If there was going to be any
spiritual activity – the EMFs weren’t going to help us in these hotel
rooms. *Generally a reading of a 2-7 could mean you have spiritual
activity. Our temperature gauges were constant for the most part
depending on where you were. All batteries were replaced before the
investigation. The batteries were then tested by a multi-meter to make sure
they were acceptable. We would go in to use the multi-meter if there were
any battery drains during the investigation. *Some say that when spirits
are trying to make contact that they “suck” all the energy out from anything
it can to try and form and this why you see the orb and the drain on your
batteries or energy from you.

Findings:
Room #1009:
*During
our last investigation this room seemed to be a major hotspot: orbs
captured in photos, the door handle moving on the outside when the inner
handle is not connected to the outside handle, and a questionable Class “C”
EVP of what we think is a person moaning. The paranormal activity
also includes the orbs captured on camera from the hallway and a
questionable unseen female voice from just outside the door.
At one point the card key locks stopped working when the
“activity” began. Much of the “activity” began around the
10:00 PM time period.
**On this night’s current investigation
Dave initially installed an infra red cam in the hall directly across
from #1009 to see if we could catch the door handle moving. However, some
guests ended up checking into this room and the camera had to be removed
from their door handle. Also, we weren’t able to use another one of
our infra red cams due to technical difficulties. Blame the cable.
First we set up a base camp in room #1007
with computer equipment to monitor the activity in room #1009. Dark and
mysterious locations do not phase Jimmy (nothing ever does), so of course we
sent him in first for a solo/call and response session. Bart and Dave were
base commanders. Our trigger object for this room was a set of chimes. *If
ghosts are energy then they should be able to cause something as simple of
chimes to move. Or so we think. We used a video camera, (2)
infra red cams, digital cams, a barometer, laser thermometer,
walkie-talkies, EMF detectors, flashlights with infra red lenses, and EVP
recorders (Electronic Voice Phenomena – this recording device can record
sound at frequencies humans can’t hear. You could be in a location and not
hear the activity when it actually occurs, but go back and listen and the
sound will be there on the recording).
-
At 10:53 PM (2) orbs floated across the
screens of the infra red cameras as Jimmy “taunted” the ghosts.
-
At 10:57 PM orbs moved across the bottom
right of the room and seemed “intelligent” with their movements.
-
At 10:58 PM more orb activity where they
moved up and down in a straight line prompted Bart to leave base camp and to
join Jimmy in the room to help catch more phenomena.
-
Dave had Bart and Jimmy shake the drapes
and pat the bed for dust to see if what we saw were dust particles instead
of orbs. After the tests were done, Dave agreed that these dust particles
quickly deteriorated and did not look the intelligent orbs of energy that we
saw earlier.
-
No EVPs were recorded while Bart and Jimmy
were in the room. However, while Bart, Jimmy, and Dave leave to investigate
the Presidential Suite, they left the EVP audio recorder recording. An EVP
was recorded in room of a man saying what we think is “Hello.” Could
this be the same voice who moaned for us last time? The sound of the
disembodied male voice is what we’d call a Class “B” EVP. Class “A”
is where no one has to tell you what you are hearing. All the words are
clear. A Class “B” EVP is where someone might have to tell you what
they think the voice is saying, or you might have a different opinion of
what you think the voice is saying. A Class “C” EVP is where you
have no clue what the sound is, you can’t explain it, or it is just a sound
that could not be identified.
*The
activity in this room occurred once again during the
10:00 PM
time frame which was similar to our last investigation.

Presidential Suite (room
#1015):
*During our last investigation Dave thought
he heard voices in the Presidential Suite, but he’s a skeptic and chalked
this up to people on the street below. But he was way up on the 10th
floor and he said they were quite loud. But, Dave is a big skeptic. Also,
it was during this time that his walkie-talkie decided not to work. Jimmy
and I tried several times to reach him. And when we couldn’t reach him we
went to get him. He had no clue that we tried to contact him during this
time and thought we were having radio silence.
**An employee explained that they will get
calls from the Presidential Suite down to their office when no one has
checked into the room and the hotel staff are accounted for. And when they
do they receive a call they get a strange static. This “phenomena” began
happening after our last investigation at the hotel.
We used video, digital cameras, EMFs, laser
thermometer, barometer, chimes, and flashlights with infra red lenses. Once
again the chimes were the trigger object. Dave, Bart, and Jimmy all
investigated this room together.
Dave was quick to point out that the red
light on the phone lighting up saying we got a message. This was not
blinking when we entered the room. We would have noticed it. Pretty
bright. We also realized that the phone wasn’t even plugged in. And on
top of that – the hand-held receiver didn’t even work. The only way the
phone would even work was by speaker phone. So – we guess ghosts prefer
speaker phone when they make their calls.

Room #807:
*Some hotel staff members report that they
get strange feelings from this room. And often times when they go to use
their card key they will get resistance from the other side of the door when
they try to open it. One staff member says they have to say “Move” in order
for whatever it is on the other side of the door to get out of the way and
for the door to open.
Bart and Jimmy investigated this room while
Dave prepared the gear for the 2nd level. We had no problems
with the door’s key card system. However, we did notice part of the door
frame edging needed some slight repair and it affected the door when opening
thus causing some resistance. We also noticed how heavy the door was and it
closed on its own as soon as you take your hand off the door handle. We did
this several times to show that the door is a heavy door. We did the usual
baseline tests, but we also used (2) trigger objects this time: chimes and a
large notepad and pen. We figured that if something was in fact in this
room that it could try and move the chimes, write something on the pad or
move the pen. The feeling in this room felt normal to us. We left one of
our EVP recorders in this room while we went on to investigate the 2nd
level. No EVPs were recorded. The CPS team by no means denies that they
could be something going on in this room, but it seemed “normal” to us.

2nd
Floor:
All the conference rooms, kitchen, hallways, fitness center, and the
two breakfast areas
*Many
Internet rumors about the illegal gambling casino being on the basement
level are not accurate. Our last investigation we investigated the basement
thinking this was the case. The 2nd floor was the real location
of the casino during the 1920’s and 30’s. This information was confirmed by
hotel management and other sources. After speaking with one of the staff
employees they said that all sales people are normally gone from this floor
no later than 5 or
6 PM.
And perhaps if they are working late - then 8 PM. They have never seen the
so-called ghost gambler. However, many reports of the gambler the stories
exist on the Internet from either past experiences from guests and former
staff members.
We set up (2) infra red cams to go along with
our other baseline tests that we usually do. The EMF detectors seemed to
work on this floor in some of the areas.
The CPS Team decided that in order to truly
get the gambler to come out that we would need to actually play some poker
in order to spark his interest. Time for some Five Card. We used real
chips, cards, and even went the extra mile of having green felt for the
table. We picked a random conference room – The Darrell Jordan Conference
Room to play the game. While setting up the gear both Dave and Bart both
heard noises coming from the Darrell Jordan Conference Room that sparked
their interest. Six minutes into the game when Bart called for the gambler
to help him play he heard someone come right up to his ear and breathe into
it. You can tell from his knee-jerk reaction on the video footage that it
shook him for a second. The breath was caught both on the camera’s audio as
well as the EVP recorder that we had on the table. After reviewing the
footage, Jimmy nor Dave “exhaled” at this moment. And none of them were
close enough to get up on his ear and breathe into it because they were
holding their cards in their seats.
While Dave was taking random pictures he
caught a nice-sized orb in the hallway. The elusive gambler? This was also
captured on our infra red cam as well.

Consensus:
The
last time
we were here some of the evidence could have been thrown out by some
skeptics and non-believers because:
-
We didn’t have proof that Bart heard a female voice ask
him if he needed help on the 10th floor hallway. Either you
believe an investigator or you don’t. Simple as that.
-
We didn’t have any proof that the door handle moved to
room #1009 because only Bart saw it in the hall while Jimmy was inside the
room– even though the inside handle to the door isn’t connected to the
outside handle. We proved this in our last investigation. We didn’t have
any camera to document this occurrence. Once again – either you believe an
investigator or you don’t.
-
The EVP recording of the “moan” from room #1009 happened
when the camera wasn’t rolling. Are we trying to pull a fast one on people
and trying to convince them that a man moaned? Up to you to decide.
-
And as for pictures or orbs - some dismiss orbs in
pictures as dust, reflections, or something wrong with a camera even though
they only occurred in the pictures when voices were heard and the door
handled moved. Once again – up to you to whether or not you believe or
not. It all comes down to street cred. Either you believe an investigator
or you don’t.
However, we still stand by our findings and experiences.
We feel that with this second investigation that you will
find it even harder to dismiss our findings and what we experienced. How do
you dismiss seeing someone react to having something or someone
that isn’t there breathe in their ear when you can hear the breath on
the camera’s audio as well as an EVP audio recording? You can’t. And Bart
isn’t that good of an actor even though he starred in West Side Story for
his high school. Orbs in a digital camera’s picture are one thing. But how
do you dismiss balls of energy forming during a call/response session that
move intelligently in room #1009 and the 2nd floor hallway?
Another pic of an orb caught on digital cam as well. Sure we caught another
EVP of a man saying “Hello,” – but our infra red cams don’t have
audio. Coincidence that it happened in the so-called haunted room #1009?
When you have a location that is rumored to be haunted it can
do many things to you psychologically. One being that you now have
expectations that the place is haunted and so you are looking for any little
thing to happen to say it is a “ghost.” You also have your mind playing
tricks on you in the dark if you heard a story about the particular place
that you’re in being haunted. And more importantly, you can now have hotel
staff and guests thinking their room is haunted when a door slightly
creaks. This is why the whole paranormal field gets so much flack.
Sometimes when something paranormal really does occur you second guess
yourself because you don’t believe. Well, we believe something is
going on at the Hotel Lawrence on the 10th floor, room #1009, the
Presidential Suite (room #1015), and parts of the 2nd floor that
we witnessed.
Once again the hotel management and staff were absolutely
delightful to work with. The Hotel Lawrence is in the process of working
with us on setting up a paranormal package for the hotel for bookings and
tours. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.
